Health impact assessment (HIA) is a methodology and a process for assessing the potential impacts (positive, negative, intended and unintended) of proposed policies, projects or programmes on the health of communities and/or populations. A HIA results in recommendations for changes in those policies, projects or programmes to strengthen the positive effects on health and to reduce avoidable or unfair impacts and the distribution of these.
